BLUNT Energy was founded as a joint venture between experienced energy professionals with more than 25 years of sector expertise.

Today, it operates as an independent company offering specialised solutions in renewable energy certifications and carbon market services, with a strong focus on EU Emissions Allowances (EUAs).

What is a Guarantee of Origin (GO)

– Guarantees of Origin are certificates, in electronic format, that certify that a given number of Megawatt-hour (MWh) produced in each period have been produced through renewable energy. One guarantee of origins is equivalent to the production of 1 Megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable energy sources.

– Power is produced, fed into the grid and consumed, regardless its origin; from fossil fuels or from renewable energy. Guarantees of origin provide the final consumer the right to decide whether the power consumed has been produced with renewable energy.

– Each Guarantee of origin count with a unique identification number a proof that the energy has been generated from renewable sources, specifying the source of energy; the dates when it was produced; the identity, location, type and capacity of the production facility; whether the GO relates to electricity or heating or cooling; whether and to what extent the installation has benefited from support; the date when the installation became operational; and the date and country of issue.

GOS tracking system

Renewable energy producers request the issuance of guarantees of origin, after authorization from the competent authority. After passing this process, producers receive the requested Guarantees of Origin in their registry account. Once this process has been completed, they can choose whether to transfer these GOs to electricity traders, to the market or to internal consumption.
Depending on the policy of each energy supplier, they can choose the amount of green energy they sell by purchasing a certain number of Guarantees of Origin to the market or directly to producers.
Once the guarantee of origin passes into the hands of the end consumer, it is “cancelled” in a process known as redemption. Redemption occurs so that the guarantee of origin is not consumed twice and to promote a transparent market where the guarantees of origin issued are equal to those consumed.
Guarantees of origin do not have a fixed price but fluctuate with the market. There are price variations depending on the technology used, the producing country, the period, weather changes, political decisions and geopolitical events.

Benefits of Guarantees of Origin

– Guarantees of origin allow the end consumer to ensure that the energy consumed comes from renewable sources. By choosing renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric, solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass, the end consumer contributes to the use of green energy and, therefore, to moving closer to a net zero economy.
Guarantees of origin can be exchanged in all EU countries due to the single European energy market and the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB). This allows the consumer to have a wide range of choices when it comes to the choice of energy consumed.
Producers’ revenues from guarantees of origin are used for the development of new renewable projects, contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases and a commitment to green energy.

A Guarantee of Origin is an electronic certificate that certifies the renewable nature of 1 MWh of energy and provides detailed information on its production process. Its function is to demonstrate to the final consumer that a certain quota or quantity of energy has been obtained from renewable sources.

Enagás GTS is the entity responsible for the GO system. It is responsible for the development, administration and supervision of the Guarantees of Origin system.
